A potentially revolutionary innovation in the auto industry, research in algae derived bio-fuel has shown that it has similar characteristics as fuel. There isn't anything better at turning chemical energy in to chemicals. At Solazyme Inc. they have discovered a strain of Algae that is able to turn sugar water into oil, they do this by growing the algae in tanks of sugar water without sunlight or CO2. Bill gates believes in this research to the point where he invested $100,000,000 of his own dollars into its research. The emissions from algae based fuel actually pull CO2 from the atmosphere making it better solution for climate change. The costs for this type of fuel is more expensive than fossil at the moment but its getting cheaper and cheaper to produce everyday.
The auto industry is a huge market, even the slightest change means 100's of millions in costs to changes in the industry. There is an insane amount of money going into research for making vehicles more economically friendly, cheaper and safer to use.
